I was so excited to photograph this beach when I first learned of it. The Moeraki Boulders are large boulders lying along a stretch of beach on the South Island. The erosion of mudstone has left these spherical boulders with beautiful detail and cracks - something that reminded me of what dinosaur eggs might be like. As the beach is on the east coast, I knew this would be a great spot for sunrise. I arrived early to determine my composition (as the boulders can even be completely covered at high tide), and decided to take my shoes off and get right into the ocean. I got up close and waited for the sun to arrive. As it broke through the horizon, the light swept beautiful across the ocean and illuminated the boulders and turned the sky all kinds of beautiful reds.
